Prior to joining Avisa, Aleš led the energy and environment practice in MCI Logos Public Affairs, managing a team working on EU affairs for a variety of international clients. Simultaneously, he was also the director of European operations for IPC – the Association Connecting Electronics Industries, leading their efforts to expand their footprint in Europe.

Previous to this, Aleš was a senior policy advisor to a Member of the European Parliament, where he worked with the ITRE and ENVI committees.

Aleš studied International Relations and Modern History in the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

Aleš speaks Slovenian, English, has a working knowledge of French, and is currently studying Russian.

He is also a published author and continues to write in his spare time.

Prior to joining Avisa Partners, Charles worked seven years at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition, where he was involved in reviewing state aid cases concerning companies’ financing and restructuring in sectors including Telecoms, IT, Media, Health, Postal services, Manufacturing, and R&D.

Previously, Charles worked as an investment banker at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and as a consultant for premier private equity and venture capital funds in both London and Paris. Charles studied Business Engineering at Ecole de Commerce Solvay in Brussels, Business Administration at L.U.I.S.S. in Rome and ESCP in Paris, and Economics at the College of Europe in Bruges.

Prior to joining Avisa, Cristina gained unique experience as a member of the key negotiation team for the Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with the EU while working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova. She also served for three years as diplomat in the Moldovan Mission to the EU and four years in the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the Republic of Moldova. This has given her an in-depth knowledge in the areas of trade and trade-related issues, including agriculture, energy, EU assistance instruments, and financial services.

In 2013, Cristina was awarded the Government Diploma for her contribution to the European Integration Process of the Republic of Moldova.

Csaba had a 14-year career as a Foreign Affairs journalist. Csaba made several documentaries and conducted high-profile interviews with Heads of State and Government and other high-ranking politicians while working as a Reporter, Senior Editor, and Presenter for Hungarian public TV and Hungarian RTL. He is a specialist in European and Latin-American issues and also on the EU and NATO integration of Hungary and Eastern Europe.

He started his Public Affairs career in 2002 and has worked in a variety of settings: corporate, trade association, and consultancy. He handled national and European Public Affairs for Nestlé, Novartis, and the Hungarian Dairy Industry. Csaba also represented these industries in the respective European trade associations.

Csaba has a Master of Arts degree from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). He is a guest lecturer at Budapest College for Communication, where he lectures on Public Affairs, Issues Management, and CSR. He has also lectured on CSR at the Central European University’s Business School.

Dr Denis MacShane is Britain’s former Minister of Europe and served on the Council of Europe and NATO Parliamentary Assembly, representing the UK as a Member of Parliament.

He was educated at Oxford and London universities and has an MA and Ph D. He has written 18 books mainly on international affairs. After a decade as a BBC journalist, during the 1980s he worked on supporting companies and trade unions through difficult transition eras in Poland, South Africa, South Korea, and Brazil.

He has lectured on European politics at universities in America, Africa, and Asia, and as a former journalist, he has run several communication training programmes for governments, private firms, and NGOs.

Denis knows many of the key EU ministers in national government and parliaments as well as most senior people in Brussels Denis has one of the best address books for key European political, media, policy and official deciders. He counts several European Commissioners and key MEPs from multiple countries and parties as personal friends, and is one of the few senior policy experts in the UK to speak up for the European Parliament.

He started his career as a Consultant for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, playing a vital role in the negotiations of the Nice Treaty. He then headed the Public Affairs Office for IBM in New Delhi.

He has also served as Head of the International Affairs department of ERG, Italy’s third-largest private industrial company. While in this role, he supported its rapid EU expansion, establishing public affairs operations in Brussels and several EU Member States. Throughout his career he has led complex advocacy campaigns in India, France, Germany, Eastern Europe, and in Brussels.

Francesco has a Bachelor’s Degree from Bocconi University.

Mr. Isao Iijima has a long and successful record of advising Japanese politicians up to the highest level. Currently, Mr. Iijima serves as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Previously, Mr. Iijima was chief of staff to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi from 2001 to 2006, by far the longest continuous government in modern Japan. He previously served Mr Koizumi when the latter was a member of the Japanese House of Representatives from 1973 onward. He also served Mr Koizumi as chief of staff when he became Minister of Health and Welfare and Minister for Post and Telecommunications.

Since 2008, Mr Iijima is visiting Professor at several universities, but he continues in parallel to play a central role in Japanese business, administrative, and political life. He is author of a number of highly successful books on his country and a much sought after lecturer and commentator.

As a pro bono Special Advisor, Mr Iijima brings Avisa a strong international network, including the US, Russia and across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He additionally advises the government of the Republic of Uganda and is also Consul in Japan for the government of Sierra Leone.

Calling on Cabinet-level European Commission experience, he benefits from an impeccable network of contacts in Brussels and national capitals built up over more than two decades of government and private-sector expertise.

An independent consultant since 2002 and the author of several books on Europe, Jacques was listed by the Financial Times in 2009 as one of the 30 prime influencers of policy and legislation in Brussels – there were only two consultants on the list.

Jacques also served as Microsoft’s European Director of Corporate Affairs from 2000 to 2002. From 1995 to 1999, he was in charge of the Euro dossier in the Cabinet of Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy.

Joris joined Avisa in October 2016. A trained lawyer, Joris has 15 years of experience in EU politics, EU Public Affairs, communications, and political marketing. He has a proven track record of advising policymakers, governments,  industry associations, and businesses on their political, public, and corporate affairs strategies.

Joris started his career as a legal and political advisor in both the Belgian Parliament and the European Parliament. After more than five years as an advisor to policymakers, he used his experience of EU decision making to support the European steel sector, in particular ArcelorMittal, ThyssenKrupp, Tata Steel, and US Steel. He then was appointed Secretary General of Metal Packaging Europe, an association whose remit comprises more than 300 manufacturing sites that employ over 350,000 people and produce 85bn units every year for the beverage, food, health & beauty, household, and industrial markets. In 2012, Joris founded his own public affairs consultancy, Oak Tree Public Affairs, assisting companies and associations with their public affairs strategy, coalition-building, and establishing contacts with Commission officials, Council representatives, and Members of the European Parliament.

Active in Belgian politics, Joris is also Mayor of his home town of Maarkedal.

Prior to joining Avisa Partners, Jurgita worked for a top international law firm in Brussels and for a leading law firm in Lithuania where she worked on the full spectrum of EU competition policy – international and domestic merger, state aid, abuse of dominance and cartel cases. Jurgita also spent most of 2014 in the task force dealing with state aid and aggressive tax planning practices of multinational companies at DG COMP.

Prior to this, for a number of years Jurgita worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers where she provided legal and tax advice for top international and local corporate clients and state institutions in a variety of industries such as finance, energy, retail, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, etc. She also served as a civil servant and lawyer for the Lithuanian Tax Authorities.

Jurgita is a graduate (LL.M. in Law and Economics) from Utrecht University, The Netherlands, where she studied European Competition and Regulatory Law. She also holds a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property Law from Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania.

She has a Fortune 500 corporate, consulting, and academic background with skills in public affairs and stakeholder relations, issues management, crisis and litigation communications, leadership counsel at board level, thought leadership and corporate social responsibility.

As a competition economist in Brussels she provided economic analysis and advice in merger, abuse of dominance, and state aid cases in sectors including mobile and fixed telecommunications services, software, and copyright (music and film) markets. Earlier in her career as a consultant she led a European Commission-funded study on broadcasting regulation in the EU and provided client advice on regulatory developments for the telecoms, media, and broadcasting sectors. She has combined academic work in regulation and public policy with government experience as a trainee in both the US (at the Federal Communications Commission and National Science Foundation) and the EU (in the Telecommunications Unit of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition) government institutions.

Karen holds a PhD in Communications from Northwestern University, an MA in Communications from the Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania, and a certificate in EU Competition Law from King’s College, London. She is currently Adjunct Professor of Business Studies at Vesalius College in Brussels, where she teaches courses on sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.

Kyoko joined Avisa in January 2013 with many years of experience in consulting and research on corporate governance and sustainability issues. She has worked for the European Commission and, the Centre for European Policy Studies, both in Brussels, and for the OECD in Paris. She also served as Special Adviser to the Japanese Embassy in Vienna, Austria, and was instrumental in the launch of Hill and Knowlton Strategies Brussels’ EU-Japan practice area for 1999-2000.

Before adding trade issues to her portfolio, Kyoko focused on the EU’s policy agenda on investor-company issues, including non-financial disclosure and long-term investment. In trade, she focuses on non-tariff barriers and defence in relation to market access, including sustainability norms, voluntary standards, and regulatory processes. In the latter field, she draws on her extensive experience as a Senior Consultant/Analyst at Vigeo, a European extra-financial rating agency (2001-2010), where she specialisied in proprietary investment research, as well as on her early work at the Textile Division of the then-DG Relex during a period of the final Multi-Fibre Agreement.

Kyoko has a PhD in Economics and Management from Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, Université Libre de Bruxelles, where she is now a Senior Research Fellow, and a Master of Public Policy, from Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy in Washington D.C., USA.

Before joining Avisa in early 2012, Michal worked in Israel for the Ministry for Environmental Protection in Jerusalem in the International Relations Department, where she was responsible for the  EU – TAIEX (Technical Assistance and Information Exchange) program. She also worked for a Television communication company as Assistant to the Legal Counsel. Upon her arrival in Brussels, Michal was an intern at the European Commission DG INFSO (now DG CONNECT) in the Inter-Institutional Relations unit, where she followed the progress of the DirectG’s dossiers progress within the EU institutions in Brussels. After her internship, Michal worked in a communication company where she focused on transport and events organization.  Michal also worked as a project assistant for the European Friends of Israel, where she was involved in organizing a mega policy event in Israel, with the participations of hundreds of MEPs and MPs from across Europe. Before joining Avisa in 2013, Michel had a long career in the diplomatic service and the aerospace, security & defense industry.

Michel was a diplomat for the French Ministry for Economy and Industry for 16 years, specializing in trade, aeronautic and defense industry, serving in many African countries and in Canada. He then joined Aérospatiale as President of Aerospatiale Canada and in 1994 moved to Brussels as permanent representative to the EU and NATO. In 2000 he was promoted to Senior Vice President, Director for EU & NATO affairs at EADS and Special Advisor to the chief strategy & marketing officer. He occupied these positions until the end of 2012.

In parallel Michel has been Chairman of the External Affairs Commission of the European Aerospace and Defence Industry Association, President of the “Europe et Défense” Club, and President of the Club of Representatives of large French Companies in Brussels. In 2014, he was appointed a member of the new Economic Council created by the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in charge of promoting Economic Diplomacy.

Prior to joining Avisa, Mikko worked for many years for the Metsä Group, one of Europe’s major forest industry groups. He held various senior management positions, including leading the international corporate affairs function. He has also worked for the European Commission, where his portfolio included trade and the environment with respect to forest products.

Prior to that, Mikko worked for the EFTA Surveillance Authority, where he was in charge of 170 Internal Market Directives, ranging from motor vehicles to medical devices. He has also worked for the Confederation of Finnish Industries.

His expertise covers climate & energy, trade policy, market access, technical regulations, sustainability, corporate responsibility, communications, forest-based industries, and EEA specific matters.

Since 1994 he is President of SPTEC Conseil, a Paris-based energy consulting firm. A former General Manager of Euro-Mediterranean think tank Observatoire Méditerranéen de l’Energie OME, he has also lectured at the Institut Français du Pétrole.

In addition Mustapha is a founding organiser of the indispensible international energy conferences “International Oil Summit” and “International Gas Summit” held annually in Paris. Nadia has six years of experience at the European Commission’s DG Competition (DG COMP) where she was involved with State aid control; as member of a State aid policy unit, Nadia drafted and consolidated various regulatory framework acts and policy tools. In her role as casehandler, she evaluated notifications of State aid to the EU and the German manufacturing industry (including sectors such as automotive, construction, food and beverage, textiles, and shipbuilding) focusing in particular on rescue and restructuring cases. Moreover, during her time at DG Competition Nadia gained valuable first-hand insight into EU antitrust and merger issues.

Following her time in DG COMP, Nadia worked as an independent expert for competition and trade law with a special focus on Africa. In this role, she provided technical advice to national competition authorities and regional trade organizations in the COMESA/SADC/ECOWAS regions on designing and implementing competition policy frameworks and trade liberalization schemes. As a result, Nadia possesses an excellent knowledge of trade- and competition-related issues in Africa.

Qualified as a German lawyer, Nadia received a LLM degree in European Community Law from the College of Europe, Bruges, and a Maitrise en Droit International Public degree from the Université Paris X. A native German, Nadia communicates fluently in English and French and has good understanding of Dutch.

He qualified as a UK solicitor in 1983, and worked for the international law firm Lovells (now Hogan Lovells LLP) in its Competition and EU Law practice for over 25 years, in both London and Brussels.

At Lovells he advised corporate clients on a wide range of issues, most notably in relation to merger control, competition investigations, and general competition law compliance.

Parvez, who joined Avisa in September 2013, has been a consultant dedicated to financial regulation and trade issues since he left the public service in 2011. During the key years immediately after the financial crisis, he was financial attaché for the United Kingdom, and his understanding of the inner workings of the EU machinery is second to none in his field.

As lead attaché on securities and markets, Parvez advised Ministers, led negotiations for the UK in the Council, and interacted with the Commission and the Parliament on complex and highly sensitive issues, including legislation on hedge funds and private equity, short selling, derivatives, and markets infrastructure. He was also involved in the creation of the new European Supervisory Authorities and follows closely to this day the evolving dynamics between EU Institutions and agencies, a critical component of the banking union.

Prior to this, Parvez spent five years as policy adviser at the UK Financial Services Authority, under the UK Treasury, where he dealt with a broad range of regulatory issues such as MiFID and requirements relating to energy and commodities markets. He also gathered compliance and forensic experience.

Philippe joins Avisa after a distinguished career in public service.  In the Barroso II Commission, he served as Special Advisor to Michel Barnier, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, where he was responsible for examining ways of reinforcing the EU’s contribution to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and improving the governance of the European bodies involved in developing these standards.

Prior to this appointment, Philippe was President of the European Investment Bank, the world’s largest international public lending institution, for a twelve-year period.  In this role, he ensured that the EIB provided financing to trans-European networks in the transport, telecommunications, and energy sectors; and supported small- and medium-sized businesses.  He was Chairman of the Interim Committee of the International Monetary Fund for five years—an exceptionally long tenure—and also served as a Governor of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Philippe began his career in public service in Belgium, where he served as Minister for Finance for nearly 11 years, during which time he was awarded “Finance Minister of the Year” by Euromoney magazine.  He also held the roles of Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister for the Budget, Scientific Policy, and Planning.  In addition, he was also twice appointed Deputy Prime Minister.

Philippe has a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Louvain and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Claremont University in Los Angeles, USA.  He is also a member of the Law faculty at the Catholic University of Louvain and invited professor at the Law and Finance faculty of the University of Luxembourg. He has been recently appointed president of the Academy for Research and Higher Education (Brussels) and of the International Center for European Education (Nice and Berlin).

He started in 1993 at the Research Centre for Computer and Law (CRID) of the University of Namur, where he worked on a range of European telecommunications policy, legislative and regulatory projects for the European Commission.

From 2008 to 2013, Sandro managed the biggest project on harmonization of ICT and cyber-security policies in the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) executed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and funded by the European Commission. The project was all-encompassing in terms of its scope: technology, the number of beneficiaries and stakeholders, and cultural barriers. Sandro enjoyed full diplomatic status during this period.

Prior to his arrival at ITU, Sandro was in charge of the Brussels office of the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA).

Prior to joining Avisa, she worked in government at the local and national levels in the United Kingdom. In Aberdeen, Scotland, she was responsible for developing and implementing a framework to evaluate £11 million-worth of publicly-funded learning disability and mental health services for cost effectiveness, strategic relevance, demand, and quality.

Following on from this, she worked for Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s economic development agency, where she led the implementation of product testing as a model for new product development.

An accomplished public speaker who mentors novice speakers, Siobhán has also had several front-page and feature articles published in the US on global health policy.
